Spreading the Gospel

I was working in the front yard garden today when a van stopped, a woman got out and asked if i had any vegetables for sale. Sure, I said we have lots of vegetables for sale. She said she definitely wanted tomatoes because she didn't trust the tomatoes from the grocery store. As she was deciding what else she wanted she told me that she has been following the progress of the garden since we first tilled it up and she was inspired to plant a small vegetable garden in her front yard.
That was the most exciting thing anyone has said to me in a long time. Our friends and neighbors, Rodney and Charlie said they too were inspired to plant a vegetable garden. They said that i shouldn't worry that they would still be buying vegetables from me in the future.
My thinking is that if everyone grew their own food and i never sold another thing i would be the happiest man in the world.

Holy smokes your vines look great! What is that you have them 'trellised' to? Bamboo? How long is it?

Just curious I have a different way to trellis, but I am going to try yours next year, that looks much easier to manage than mine. ;)

I use 6' metal T-posts to which i attach bamboo poles. I prune the vines to 2 branches and keep removing the new shoots that emerge from the leaf axils. When the vines get as tall as i can reach i top them off (most of the time) and let the fruits ripen from bottom to top. this method allows plenty of air circulation which helps reduce disease pressure. Pruning the vines results in fewer but much larger fruits.

Awesome idea. I'm seriously going to give it a 'go' next year. I put out something like 40 plants this year (lost 160 to sunscald) and I have just started pruning them, I am a big fan.

They look great! Good job.

Hi Duane! It is so great to see someone else who is not worried about what others will think of their front yard! Your tomatoes look amazing!

My hubby is more traditional than I am (aka he cares a bit more that the house does not look like a full blown farm :-) ...so we compromised, on the main area of the front garden we have wildlife plants and a mini-orchard (white sapote, sapodilla, mango, mulberry, citrus, star fruit, grapes, etc.)...this week we'll start building the raised beds for our side veggie garden...hubby became a convert when he tasted the potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, salad greens, beans, etc that I grew in large pots...so now he trusts I can do this, I guess
:-)

I love to see other folks' gardens and enjoyed visiting yours throughly!

What a great story! It is a wonderful feeling to know when you've inspired someone else like this.

I found your blog from transition Ga. Are you a member of
http://www.eattheview.org/ ?

More peeps should be growing food instead of turf.

Do you receive any hassles for growing food in town?

Have you had to jump through any hoops to sell produce?

What advice could you offer for getting started marketing?
